Yesterday was an awesomely productive day, and it included getting started on over hauling my flower beds.
I did not put the bed in, and I have largely ignored it since we move in a year ago. But during the glorious snowy winter I began daydreaming about how pretty it could be with some TLC.
It's been neglected for a long time, and so the irises and random tulips living there have pretty much started choking themselves out. Purple irises are my favorite flower of all time, I adore them, which I include only as a data point to highlight how ugly they must be when *I* say "they aren't even pretty irises."
So, I am digging the whole mess up and starting from scratch.
I started digging yesterday. And wow. So I didn't know plants could actually get root bound in the GROUND. I am going to have to buy more soil because the roots and bulbs are such a knotted dense mess I'm pulling out almost a foot deep and there's very little dirt left behind.
But I think it will be worth it.

Ugly huh? Also this bed gets different kinds of sun halfway across. One half gets some sun, and the other half gets almost none. Hence the giant explosion in that one corner where it gets the most sun.

This is what it looks like from my door. Makes you want to spend time in the front yard doesn't it? /sarcasm

This is what it looks like from the street. Aren't you glad you aren't our neighbors?
I am pulling out everything but the mint plant over there in the left-hand corner. It thrives right where it is, and hey! Fresh mint!
Along the back, by the porch, we're putting in boxwood. There's a directing stone for the water that comes out of the gutters right behind the mint, so we can't put boxwood there, what we're going to do is get a whiskey barrel and put a tall bush in that, add even more depth and an extra tier. Eventually we'll put an unobtrusive patio rod iron patio set out there too.
In front of the boxwood the rest of the bed is going to be divided in half: sunny, not sunny. I plan to put in short, colorful, but simple flowers. Maybe some herbs. On the shaded half I am considering a simple shade-happy ground cover. I need to research some more. :)
